LESSON 01 / 0820 MIN READ

Start with
the person.

Before you design a screen, understand the person who will use it. A useful experience begins with their goal—not with a feature list.

A feature is a means, not the goal.

Someone searching for a course may want to change careers, solve a problem at work, or explore an interest. The same interface can serve different goals, and each goal changes what information matters.

PAUSE & CONSIDER

What is the person trying to achieve?

Think of a digital experience you use often. Describe the goal in one sentence without mentioning a button, screen, or feature.

Your notes stay in this tab and are not sent or stored.

Keep the context in view.

Time, environment, confidence, and access needs can change how a person experiences the same task. Use these as questions to investigate, rather than assumptions about your users.

Ready when you are.
